Entrance Exam Requirements for Preparatory Courses

This preparatory course will prepare foreign students for the requirements of entry tests to Hungarian institutions of music of higher education. Besides systematizing their already acquired music knowledge and experience, they can improve their musical skills and theoretical knowledge. Thus, students will be sufficiently prepared to follow studies in higher education.

Entry requirements:

  • high school certificate
  • English language proficiency  
  • entrance examination in music performance
  • music theory and solfege skill (oral and written)


Application Process:

  1. The applicant will submit application materials for the major and the marked subjects on a cloud-based online video sharing platform (Google Drive, YouTube are recommended). If the Admission Board finds that application materials satisfy application requirements, materials the applicant may take the exam of the other subjects.
  2. The exam of the compulsory subjects is administered via video conference. The applicant will be notified about the date and time of the exam.

 

Compulsory subjects:

Written test

  • notation of an 8-bar one-part melody, which contains varied melodic and rhythmic elements
  • notation of a two-part Viennese Classical quotation with functional bass
  • notation and identification of 10 intervals on a given, identical lower note
  • notation and identification of 10 triads (major, minor, augmented, diminished triads in root-position and in inversion) on a given, identical lower note
  • construction of  major, minor (natural, harmonic and melodic) and modal scales on a given note

Oral exam

  • sight-reading of an 8 to 10-bar, one-part Viennese Classical melody ( the tune may contain simple alterations and/or modulation)
  • singing 10 folk songs by memory from the candidate’s country, introducing the songs’ characteristic and ethnographic features. The titles and scores must be brought by the candidate

 

Major subjects:
 

Piano

  • 2 Baroque pieces
  • a complete Classical sonata or sonatina
  • 1 etude
  • 1 Romantic piece
  • 1 contemporary piece or 1 piece from the 20th century

Organ

  • 1 chorale prelude by J.S. Bach
  • 1 prelude and fugue by J. S. Bach
  • 1 easier piece in other style
  • piano pieces:      
    • 1 Bach piece (prelude or invention)
    • 1 Classical sonata movement
    • 1 Romantic piece
    • 1 piece from the 20th century
    • 1 etude

Recorder

  • Scales (major and minor scales up to 3 sharps and 4 flats, scales of thirds, triad arpeggiation, V7 and seventh chord arpeggiation minimum from f’ to g’’’)
  • 2 Baroque etudes or a set of variation from the book of J. van Eyck: Der Fluyten Lust-hof I-III.
  • At least two movements from a Baroque sonata or concerto

The applicant can use only Baroque double fingering instrument. The applicant has to play also the alto and treble recorder.

Flute

  • Scales (major and minor scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats, scales of thirds, triad arpeggiation, single and double tonguing)
  • 3 different characters exercises from Etudes for Flute by Köhler (op.33. 1st book)
  • the slow and the fast movement of a Baroque sonata
  • a free chosen piece

One of the pieces has to be performed by memory.

Oboe

  • Scales (major and minor scales up to 2 sharps and 2 flats.
  • 2  different characters exercises
  • the slow and the fast movement of a Baroque sonata
  • a free chosen piece

Clarinet

  • a free chosen major and minor scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats (scales of thirds, triad arpeggiation, V7 and diminished seventh chord arpeggiation)
  • Jeanjean: Etudes, the 2nd exercise from the 1st book
  • a free chosen etudes in different styles
  • a slow movement from the following concerto performed by memory:
    • Kozeluch: E flat major clarinet concerto
    • Tucek: B flat major clarinet concerto
    • Rösler-Rosetti: Clarinet concerto
  • a free chosen piece or a fast movement in different style

Saxophone

  • a free chosen major and minor scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats (triad arpeggiation, V7 chord arpeggiation in major and diminished seventh chord arpeggiation in minor)
  • 2 different character free chosen etudes
  • a free chosen etude from Vingt-cinq Exercices Journaliers by Klose
  • 2 pieces from the following list:
    • Glinka: Vocalise
    • Jolivet: Fantaisie Impromtue
    • Zambarano: Neapolitan terantella
    • Eccles: Sonata (a fast and a slow movement )
    • Guilhaud: 1. Concertino

One of these pieces has to be performed by memory.

Bassoon

  • major and minor scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats (legato, staccato and tenuto playing)
  • 2 different  character etudes possibly by Weissenborn, Neukirchner or Hara
  • 2 easy, short, different character pieces with piano accompaniment (arrangements are accepted)

French-horn

  • 5 patterns of a major and a minor scale in the one and half octave system
  • 2 etudes from Maxime-Alphonse Nr. 1.
  • a concert piece recommended from the following list:
    • Skroup: B flat major concerto (with short cadence)
    • Beethoven: Romance
    • Concone: Theme and variation
  • performing a concert piece by memory with piano accompaniment

Trumpet

  • 5 patterns of a major and a minor scale in the one and half octave sistem
  • Clodomir: Trumpet school (I. book:  26., 28., 29. exercise)
  • Telemann: F major Sonata. I-II. movement or
  • Händel: B flat major Sonata, I-II. movement

Trombone

  • a free chosen triad arpeggiation in crotchet and quaver motion in two octave range from large E to high B flat. Metronom mark is at least: q = 50
  • Two, possibly different character exercises from the following list:
    • Müller: Technical Exercises, III. book
    • Kopprasch: 60 Selected Studies, I. book
    • Lafosse: Complete Méthode, I. book
  • performing a concert piece by memory with piano accompaniment

Tuba

  • playing by memory a minor and a major scale in the applicant’s own instrumental range
  • two different character exercises (arrangements are accepted)
  • playing by memory two different character concert pieces with piano accompaniment
    (arrangements are accepted)

Percussion

  • 3 free chosen exercises from the following list:
    • H. Knauer: Paukenschule
           I.  part: 10., 12., 16., 18., 22. 30.
          II. part: 3., 9., 13.  or similar difficulty pieces
  • a free chosen solo or piano accompaniment concert piece (e.g. xylophone, marimba, vibraphone)

Violin

  • scale in 3 or 4 octaves, double stops
  • one etude of the applicant's choice
  • recommended violin etudes:
    • Dancla: Etudes, op. 68.
    • Mazas: Etudes,  op. 36.
    • Dont: Gradus ad Parnassum op. 38. II.-III. book
                 24 Preparatory Exercises, op. 37.
  • 1st movement of a concerto accompanied by piano or orchestra
  • the slow movement of a Baroque sonata
  • a concert piece

Viola

  • two etudes with different character
  • recommended viola etudes:

    • Campagnoli: 41 Exercises

Cello

  • major and minor scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats in three octaves
  • three etudes of different character and technical challenges
  • recommended volumes:
    • Dotzauer: Etudes, II. book
    • Lee: 40 Melodic etudes,  II. book or
    • other exercises of similar technical level
  • the slow and the fast movement of a sonata
  • a concert piece         

All of the pieces must be performed by memory.

Contrabass

  • scales in two octaves
  • 2 optional etudes of different technical difficulty
  • 2 pieces in different style with piano accompaniment performed by memory

If the applicant has not studied the contrabass but he/she has studied any other strings, the applicant has to perform pieces on his/her studied instrument.

Guitar

  • 2 etudes (Carcassi, Sor)
  • a piece composed for vihuela (Milan, Narvaez, Sanz)
  • a dance movement from the Baroque erea
  • a free chosen piece

Singing

  • 1 preclassical or Baroque piece
  • 1 Romantic lied
  • scale passage

Solfege-Theory of music major

  • Written exam/dictation:
    • one-part Baroque excerpt with typical rhythm patterns (about 6-8 bars)
    • two-part Viennese Classical excerpt with simple functional bass (about 8 bars)
    • triads in root position and inversions
  • Oral exam:
    • sight-singing of an excerpt from a Classical or early Romantic art song (about 6-8 bars)
    • singing scales (major, minor, modal scales) on a given note
    • formal and tonal analysis of the applicant’s classical sonata movement(see piano material)
    • singing 10 folk songs by memory from the candidate’s country, introducing the songs’ characteristic and ethnographic features. (The  titles and scores  of the songs must be brought by the candidate.)
  • Piano exam:
    • a piece by J. S. Bach (on the level of the two- or three-part inventions)
    • first movement of a Viennese Classical sonatina or sonata
    • a piece from a 19th- or 20th-century composer

All of these pieces have to be performed by memory.
