Entrance Exam Requirements for BA Programme of Performing Art

Qualification:        

  • Classic Instrumental Music Performer
  • Classical Music Singer
  • Choral Conductor

Specialization:   

classical piano, organ, guitar, violinviola, cello, double bass, recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussions, voice, choral conducting

Entry requirements:

  • high school certificate
  • English language proficiency  
  • entrance examination in music performance
  • music theory and solfege skill (oral and written), piano

Application Process:

  1. The applicant will submit application materials for the major and the marked subjects on a cloud-based online video sharing platform (Google Drive, YouTube are recommended). If the Admission Board finds that application materials satisfy application requirements, materials the applicant may take the exam of the other subjects.
  2. The exam of the other subjects (solfege, theory of music, folk music) is via administered video conference. The applicant will be notified about the date and time of the exam.

Major subjects:

Conducting:

  • Conducting two optional choral pieces in different style and character chosen by the applicant. The applicant has to conduct either a choir or a vocal ensemble. Conducting recorded music or piano music is not acceptable.

Compulsory subjects:

Solfege, theory of music:

Written exam (dictation)

  • notation of a two-part Baroque (imitative) excerpt/material by dictation (6-8 bars)
  • notation of an one-part 20th-21st century  excerpt by dictation
  • notation of the soprano and bass (outer parts) of a Viennese Classical excerpt and indicating the chords by Roman numerals (about 8 bars)

Oral exam

  • material brought by the candidate: 4 pieces from the vocal literature of the period between the 17th century and the present day (choral works, short arias, songs). The pieces must be analyzed, sung and accompanied on the piano by the candidate. The titles and unmarked scores (without any inscriptions made by the candidate) of the works must be brought by the candidate.
  • sight-reading: singing a 18-19th century aria or song excerpt with piano (accompaniment is provided by a member of the Examination Board)
  • assessment of knowledge of the harmony and formal structure of the Viennese Classical period
    • playing chord progressions by figured bass or by dictation
    • complex analysis of a movement chosen from the material brought by the candidate (piano, voice)

Folk music:

  • singing 10 folk songs by memory from the candidate’s country, introducing the songs’ characteristic and ethnographic features. The titles and the scores of the songs must be brought by the candidate.

Piano compulsory instrument:

Performance of three piano pieces or movements by memory:

  • a piece by J.S. Bach (on the level of the two- or three-part inventions)
  • a sonata-form movement from the Viennese Classical period
  • a Romantic piece or a piece by Béla Bartók

Voice:

  • a healthy, trainable voice is a requirement for entry
  • expressive performance of two songs/lieder by memory of contrasting character composed in different stylistic periods, with piano accompaniment. Pianist is provided by the Examination Board

  • notation of an about eight-bar long two-part Viennese Classical excerpt (the tune may contain simple alterations and/or modulation)
  • notation and identification of 10 intervals on a given, identical lower note
  • notation and identification of 10 triads (major, minor, augmented, diminished triads in root position and in inversion) on a given, identical lower note

Oral exam in Solfege

  • sight-singing of a one-part vocal excerpt from a Baroque/Viennese Classical/Romantic piece ( the tune may contain alterations and/or modulation)
  • singing 10 folk songs by memory from the candidate’s country, introducing the songs’ characteristic and ethnographic features; the list and the sheets of the songs must be brought by the candidate

Written test in Theory of Music

  • notation of the outer parts of an excerpt of a J. S. Bach choral arrangement, its tonal and harmonic analysis
  • the formal and tonal analysis of a Viennese Classical movement given to the candidate at the exam

Oral exam in Theory of Music

  • playing typical 18th century chord progressions on the piano and/or recognising them by ear

  • two etudes with different character and technical task (Hoffmeister, Campagnoli Rode, Gavinies  etudes)
  • one Bach movement from a cello suite, violin solo sonata or partita
  • a slow movement of a concert piece or concerto

  • two etudes of different character from the following volumes:

  • a 20th century solo piece for recorder

Performing Art – Classical Flute  

  • two etudes of different character (Andersen, Köhler op. 75, Böhm)
  • a complete Baroque work
  • a fast movement of a concerto
  • a concert piece from a stylistic era different from the ones above
  • scales up to 7 sharps and 7 flats

Performing Art – Classical Oboe  

  • scales up to 7 sharps and 7 flats

Performing Art – Classical Clarinet

Performing Art – Classical French-horn

  • Scales: major and minor scales up to 7 sharps and 7 flats in quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes, scales of thirds, triad arpeggiation, major scales in V7 chord arpeggiation and minor scales in seventh chord seventh degree arpeggiation
  • Transposition: E, E flat, D, C, G, A, B-horn
  • Etudes:

  • a freely chosen poem or short piece of prose
