Application Process:
- The applicant will submit application materials for piano and voice on a cloud-based online video sharing platform (Google Drive, YouTube are recommended). If the Admission Board finds that application materials satisfy application requirements, materials the applicant may take the exam of the other subjects.
- The exam of the other subjects (solfege, theory of music, folk music) is via administered video conference. The applicant will be notified about the date and time of the exam.
Solfege, theory of music:
Written exam (dictation)
- notation of a two-part Baroque (imitative) material by dictation (6-8 bars)
- notation of an one-part 20th-21st century excerpt by dictation
- notation of the soprano and bass (outer parts) of a Viennese Classical excerpt and indicating the chords by Roman numerals (about 8 bars)
Oral exam
- material brought by the candidate:
- 5 pieces from the vocal literature of the period between the 17th century and the present day (choral works, short arias, songs). The pieces must be analyzed, sung and accompanied on the piano by the candidate.
- the titles and unmarked scores of the works
- sight-reading: 18-19th century aria or song excerpt with piano (accompaniment is provided by a member of the Examination Board)
- assessment of knowledge of the harmony and formal structure of the Viennese Classical period
- playing chord progressions by figured bass or by dictation
- complex analysis of a movement chosen from the material brought by the candidate (piano, voice)
Folk music:
- singing 10 folk songs by memory from the candidate’s country, introducing the songs’ characteristic and ethnographic features. The titles and scores must be brought by the candidate.
Piano compulsory instrument:
Performance of three piano pieces or movements by memory.
- a piece by J.S.Bach (on the level of the two- or three-part inventions)
- a sonata-form movement from the Viennese Classical period
- a Romantic piece or a piece by Béla Bartók
Voice:
- a healthy, trainable voice is a requirement for entry.
- expressive performance of two songs/lieder by memory of contrasting character, composed in different stylistic periods, with piano accompaniment. A pianist is provided by the Examination Board.
