Entrance Exam Requirements for Master Programme of Performing Arts

Entry requirements:   

  • BA degree in suitable instrumental / vocal area                                
  • English language proficiency
  • entrance examination


Application Process:

  1. The applicant  will submit application materials for the major and the marked subjects on a cloud-based online video sharing platform (Google Drive, YouTube are recommended). If the Admission Board finds that application materials satisfy application requirements, materials the applicant may take the exam of the other subjects.
  2. The exam of the other subjects (solfege, theory of music, folk music) is via administered video conference. The applicant will be notified about the date and time of the exam.
 ENTRANCE EXAM REQUIREMENTS

Compulsory subjects:

Written test in Solfege

  • notation of an about eight-bar long two-part Viennese Classical quotation (the tune may contain alterations and/or modulation)
  • notation and naming of 10 intervals on various lower notes, which are given
  • notation and naming of 10 triads (major, minor, augmented, diminished triads in root position and in inversion) on various lower notes, which are given
  • notation of a one-part fragment from a 20th or 21th century piece of music

Oral exam in Solfege

  • sight-singing of a one-part vocal excerpt from a Baroque/Classical/Romantic piece ( the tune may contain alterations and/or modulation)
  • singing 10 folk songs by memory from the candidate’s country, introducing the songs’ characteristic and ethnographic features; the list and the sheets of the songs must be brought by the candidate

Written test in Theory of Music

  • notation of the soprano and bass (outer parts) of a Viennese Classical excerpt and indicating the chords by numbers (about 8 bars)
  • The formal and tonal analysis of a Classical movement given to the candidate at the exam

Oral exam in Theory of Music

  • Playing typical 18th century harmonic progressions on the piano and/or recognising them by ear

  • a prelude and fugue from any volume of  Das Wohltemperiertes Klavier by J. S. Bach
  • a complete Viennese Classical (or Schubert) piano sonata
  • a Romantic piece of greater volume
  • a Romantic, virtuoso etude
  • a 20th century piece for piano

 

Performing Art – Classical Organ  

  • a piece for organ by a composer preceding J.S. Bach
  • J. S. Bach: A Prelude, Fantasy or Toccata and Fugue
  • an organ sonata by J. S. Bach
  • a Romantic concert piece
  • a 20th century piece for organ

 

Performing Art – Classical Violin  

  • two etudes by N. Paganini (Op.1.)
  • the first two movements of a solo sonata by J.S. Bach (BVW 1001, 1003, 1005) or Ciacconna (BWV 1004)
  • the first or last movement of a concerto from the Romantic period or 20th, 21st century

 

Performing Art – Classical Cello  

  • two etudes of different character from the following volumes:
    • D. Popper: Hohe Schule des Violoncellospiels
    • J. L. Duport: 21 Etudes
    • A. Piatti: 12 Caprices
    • A. F. Servais 6 Caprices
  • from J. S. Bach’s Suites a Prelude or two dance movements
  • a slow and a fast movement of a concerto
  • a concert piece, possibly virtuoso

 

Performing Art – Classical Double Bass  

  • a freely chosen etude (Storch, Hrabe, Mengoli etc.)
  • a freely chosen movement from cello suites by J.S. Bach or suite by H. Fryba
  • fast and slow movement of a sonata (Misek I., II., Hindemith, Schubert etc.)
  • fast and slow movement of a concerto (Dittersdorf, Vanhal, Bottesini, Koussewitzky etc.)

The pieces must be performed from memory, except for the sonata.
The sonata and the concerto should be in different styles.

 

Performing Art – Classical Guitar  

  • a complete Bach suite, sonata, or partita
  • a concerto
  • two pieces chosen by the candidate from eras different from the ones above

  • an etude for advanced technical skills

  • 1 movement from J. S. Bach Adaptations of Violin solo Sonatas (Delecluse)
  • a piece from Paganini’s 14 Caprices clarinet adaptations
  • a modern etude (Perier, Ruggiero, Zitek etc.)
  • a concerto (by memory)
  • a 20th century or contemporary solo piece

  • a freely chosen etude from the volumes below:

Performing Art – Classical French-horn

  • 1 Classical horn concerto with cadence (complete work)
  • 1 piece chosen by the candidate (from any era)
  • compulsory etudes: O. Franz: Nr. 1 Concert Etude and Maxime-Alponse: Volume V. Nr. 8.

  • 2nd etude by Charlier
  • a Classical trumpet concerto with own cadence by memory
  • one piece from the following list:

Performing Art – Classical Voice (Opera Singer)  

  • 5 arias in different styles. A minimum of 3 arias and 2 songs, of which a Mozart aria with recitativo and a romantic aria are mandatory
  • a piece by a Hungarian composer in Hungarian (we provide consultation)
  • a freely chosen poem or short piece of prose

The works must represent different musical styles.
The works must be performed from memory in the original language and in the original tone.

 

Performing Art – Classical Voice (Oratorio and Song Singer)  ​​​​​​​

  • 3 songs in different style, of which a romantic song is mandatory
  • 3 oratorios or cantata arias with at least one recitative, of which a Baroque aria is mandatory
  • a piece by a Hungarian composer in Hungarian (we provide consultation)

The works must represent different musical styles.
The works must be performed from memory in the original language and in the original tone.

 

Performing Art – Choir Conductor

  • Conducting three optional choral pieces in different style and character chosen by the applicant:
    • 1 motet from the Renaissance or Baroque period
    • 1 Romantic choral composition
    • 1 contemporary choral composition

One of the compositions must be an accompanied piece. The applicant has to conduct a choir, conducting recorded music or piano music is not acceptable.

  • Performance of three piano pieces or movements by memory: DVD
    • a piece by J. S. Bach (three-part invention or prelude and fugue)
    • a sonata-form movement from the Viennese Classical period
    • a Romantic piece or a piece composed by a 20th-21st century composer
